Hace treinta y tantos años nos entregaron un mapa y nos dijeron que era el último. La historia había terminado: democracia liberal, libre mercado, y adelante, que el resto era administración. Yo crecí con ese mapa. Tú también. Con él decidimos carreras, hipotecas, países, jubilaciones. Y el mapa se venció sin avisar, como se vencen las cosas importantes: no de golpe, sino de a poco, hasta que un día miras el terreno y ya no se parece al papel. El obrero hizo todo lo que el mapa decía y la planta cerró. El oficinista estudió lo que el mapa mandaba y una máquina redacta ahora sus reportes. El pensionado ahorró como el mapa indicaba y la pensión ya no alcanza para el mundo que le tocó vivir de más. Nadie les mintió exactamente. Simplemente nadie les avisó que el mapa había caducado.

Este ensayo es el mapa nuevo. No es una profecía: es la descripción de fuerzas que ya están operando, medibles, con cifras y con dirección, que escribí por primera vez hace años en un libro que llamé La era microglobal y que el tiempo se ha empeñado en confirmar. La tesis cabe en una línea: el mundo dejó de organizarse en bloques grandes — países, corporaciones, clases — y empezó a organizarse alrededor de la unidad más pequeña que existe: la persona conectada. Lo macro se volvió micro y lo local se volvió global, al mismo tiempo. Un muchacho en Puebla puede venderle al planeta; una corporación de cien años puede morir en un trimestre. Esa doble báscula — todo más chico y todo más mundial — es la que va a decidir tu década. Lo que sigue te dice cómo. Y a ti, exactamente a ti, te dice dónde estás parado.

Thirty-odd years ago they handed us a map and told us it was the last one. History had ended: liberal democracy, free markets, and onward — the rest was administration. I grew up with that map. So did you. With it we chose careers, mortgages, countries, retirements. And the map expired without notice, the way important things expire: not all at once, but little by little, until one day you look at the terrain and it no longer matches the paper. The factory worker did everything the map said and the plant closed. The office worker studied what the map ordered and a machine now drafts his reports. The pensioner saved as the map instructed and the pension no longer covers the world he lived long enough to see. Nobody exactly lied to them. Simply, nobody told them the map had expired.

This essay is the new map. It is not a prophecy: it is a description of forces already in motion — measurable, with figures and direction — which I first wrote down years ago in a book I called La era microglobal, and which time has insisted on confirming. The thesis fits in one line: the world stopped organizing itself in large blocks — countries, corporations, classes — and began organizing around the smallest unit there is: the connected person. The macro became micro and the local became global, at the same time. A kid in Puebla can sell to the planet; a hundred-year-old corporation can die in a quarter.
